Natural Evolution: PaaS to SaaS

If we are to oversimplify the evolution of the value chain in the computing industry, it broadly breaks down to: from hardware to operating systems to software applications (a little of the chicken/egg fallacy there). Using that storyline to examine the current online video platform market, we are starting to see platform providers evolving into application providers, or platform providers beginning...

Google to buy Brightcove. Not.

I got my first email at 12:28 pm – “rumor: Google to buy Brightcove.” I got my second email at 1:07 pm – “rumor false: Google to buy Brightcove.” I spent the time during those emails scratching my head – What is wrong with the Brin/Page/Schmidt triumvirate? Does it really make sense for Google to invest in an up-market (at those price points Brightcove is no...

Adobe announces DRM for Flash

Recently, the artist formerly known as Macromedia – Adobe plugged the most obvious hole in its Flash platform by announcing DRM in the form of Flash Access 2.0. What can we take away? Premium content comes at a premium and needs to be treated differently. Adobe has effectively killed the Adobe Media player – browser-based streaming is the future. The competition for adoption by premium-content...

The Power of You

This is a super interview of Greg Jarobe (co-founder of SEO-PR) on ReelSEO. He talks about the opportunity presented by an audience of over 105 million monthly unique visitors, and some of the mindset changes needed to capitalize on that opportunity. Key take-aways: 1) Think of YouTube as an opportunity to promote, and pre-sell. 2) Provide enhanced content(high quality videos, lots of videos), and...

Not so Bright-cove

After announcing a few months ago that they were shutting down Brightcove.TV, Brightcove has now announced that they will be discontinuing their ad-supported free version. The upwards jump is scary..from $0/year, you’re now faced with $6000/year. I remember a recent interview when Jeremy Allaire said: “We’ve made multiple bets, and the platform side won.” Obviously, some publishers...

Obamania

I say this on a personal note, acknowledging that some of you might feel otherwise, including some folks over at Marcellus, but I need to say this: It is not a political fever that has gripped the world. It is Obamania that has the world glued to their TV sets today, and it is because of Obama that the world is paying attention to McCain. If Joe Lieberman was running against McCain, then McCain wouldn’t...

Chrome=Windows, Rebooted. Microsoft=Google, Rebooted.

Just found this brilliant image at OneComics. I’m not sure that Federico Fieni realizes how beautifully he’s merged art with technology. And art is always open to interpretation, so my interpretation is: Chrome is the new Windows. Instead of a PC equipped with an OS + Application stack, you now have a browser equipped with an Internet connection + web services stack. The choice of colors...

The TechCrunch Effect

We just got featured on TechCrunch, and of course, the effect was that traffic went through the roof. We had a fairly decent number of folks asking us questions, and a good number of people wanting a trial account. So- thank you, TechCrunch, for this opportunity and exposure. We’re very grateful(inspite of my usual bitchy behavior w/ M.A.). There are some interesting things being said on the...

Adobe adds adaptive bandwidth streaming to Flash player 10

Just learned, via NewTeeVee that Adobe just launched Flash (Player) 10..with the capability to deliver adaptive bandwidth streaming. I assume that bit is useful only for folks using Flash media server(or a comparative streaming server like Wowza/Red5) to stream their content. Of course, we’ll do some more looking into this now, and see how we can leverage Flash 10. In the meantime, if you want...
